Food Recall Resource

National Brands Included in a Massive Baked Product Recall

One of the largest national producers of packaged bakery goods in the country, Flowers Food, has issued a massive contaminated product recall.  Flowers is pulling dozens of brands and varieties of bread and buns sold at popular retailers like Wal-Mart, Aldi, and Publix.  The reason for the recall is because affected products may contain pieces of hard plastic.

Baked Goods Recalled for Choking Hazard

Flowers Foods initiated the massive product recall after finding pieces of hard plastic in production equipment.  This finding suggests that vast numbers of their packaged baked goods may also be contaminated with hard plastic pieces.  Joining the crowd of foreign material recalls Bad Food Recall has addressed lately, Flowers Food disclosed many varieties of their baked goods may be contaminated.

Pieces of hard plastic of a certain size are considered class 3 foreign matter contamination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Class 3 adulterants are choking hazards, and consumers should take care with these products.

Luckily, Flowers took swift and decisive action.  So far, there are no consumer complaints about injuries related to the baked goods.   However, the sheer number and variety of brands possibly contaminated means there is still a high risk of injury to consumers.

Who Does this Product Recall Affect?

Flowers Foods is based in Georgia, but they are one of the largest producers of fresh packaged bakery foods in the country.  In 2018, their retail sales exceeded $4 billion.  Dozens of brands are included in this product recall due to the risk of choking.

The producer distributed the contaminated products to retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.  Essentially, consumers around the country should be cautious.  If you buy packaged bread or buns, your family may be at risk of this product recall.

Which Brands are Included in this Product Recall?

Considering the popularity of Flowers Foods brands, we at Bad Food Recall are choosing to share the complete list of bakery products in this recall.  Consumers can identify the products by their “best by” dates and the first three digits of their lot number.

What are the Dangers of Hard Plastic in Food?

Hard or sharp pieces of plastic over 2mm in length pose a choking hazard, especially when encountered in a soft food such as bread.  The abrupt difference in textures is so jarring, the unfortunate victim is at risk of choking just from the presence of the adulterant.

If the piece is large enough or sharp enough, it may also cause dental injury, cuts to the inside of the mouth, cuts to the digestive system, or a bowel obstruction.
